Discussing and preparing for IVF can be the subject of your consultation at our women’s health hub in West Perth. We help you with cycle tracking, diagnosis and the management of PCOS, and general fertility investigations. We also investigate and discuss the conditions that may have led to your interest in IVF, such as recurrent miscarriages. Comprehensive fertility treatment (IVF, ICSI, ovulation induction) is planned and coordinated with Monash IVF West Leederville, one of WA’s leading fertility centres.

In simple terms, one egg is taken out of the body and several hundred thousand sperm are placed around it. What you then want, with this assisted way of conceiving an embryo, is for one sperm to be successful.

To get to this point, most women go through ‘controlled ovarian stimulation’ (COS). The ovaries are stimulated, in a controlled way. In this procedure, the same hormone as that produced by the brain, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), is given via injections.
As a woman doing IVF treatment, you inject much higher doses than what the brain normally produces. Your goal is to recruit not just one egg, but a whole group of them at once.
A variation to the IVF procedure is ICSI, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, where a single sperm is selected and injected into the egg itself as opposed to the situation where hundreds of thousands are placed around the egg.
In conjunction with Monash IVF West Leederville, one of WA’s leading fertility centres, your fertility specialist will work with you to make sure you have a full understanding of what is the most suitable treatment option for your situation.
IVF treatment step-by-step
We believe that when you start an IVF journey, you deserve to be empowered and well-informed for that journey. At Woom, we work together as specialists and as a team of allied health professionals, to support you in all areas of women’s health and fertility. And that includes discussing the steps in detail so you are as healthy, confident, and relaxed as possible when you start your fertility treatment.
First, we collect all the information that will help us tailor your treatment to your personal situation. Your body is unique, and that is why we use a series of blood tests and ultrasounds to get really clear and reliable information.
Over the space of two weeks, you will do 3 or 4 tests, to monitor your estrogen levels and the size of the follicles that are growing on your ovaries.

So what are the actual steps in an IVF cycle?
- On day one of your menstrual cycle, you ring the fertility clinic. The fertility nurse will then advise you when to commence treatment. By then, you would have received your training, so you know how to use the medication by giving yourself the injections. As you give yourself the injections that are part of your IVF treatment, you may start to experience some ‘hyperstimulation’ symptoms. They can include bloating and...labile emotions.
- Once your follicles have reached an ideal size and your oestrogen levels have risen some 10-fold, your fertility nurse will advise you to take a ‘trigger’ injection with hCG. This hormone, called human chorionic gonadotropin, or hCG triggers an ovary to mature and release an egg.
- Thirty-six to thirty-eight hours after the trigger injection you will be scheduled for the ‘egg collection procedure’ at your fertility clinic. It is a surgical procedure, either under sedation or a general anaesthetic. Your eggs are then taken to the laboratory where they are combined with the sperm which is either fresh or frozen, depending on your situation.
- Embryo transfer usually happens five days later when your embryo reaches the ‘blastocyst’ stage. Extra embryos created can be frozen for later use, in what will then be a ‘frozen embryo transfer cycle’.

IVF cost Perth
Quite often, getting clarity about the cost of your IVF treatment will also be part of the questions and concerns you may have.
In Perth and around WA, IVF is not offered within the public sector for the majority of people. If you qualify, IVF in cases of infertility can be a Medicare-rebatable service.
If your cover level allows it, your private health insurance will cover a portion of the costs: For example, the in-hospital procedures such as the egg collection, surgeon fees, and anaesthetist fees.
There are many factors that affect the cost of fertility treatment and this is very individual. Depending on your personal situation and your health cover, ask your doctor or nurse about the out-of-pocket expenses that you will need to pay for tests, your treatment, or the medication.

In comparing IVF ‘price-tags’ and looking at the offers around Perth, we recommend bearing in mind that fertility treatment is a highly specialised area. Not all fertility and IVF specialists in Perth are fully certified and it is advised to look into a CREI-certified specialist. CREI means ‘Certificate of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility’. As you can understand, the additional 3 years of sub-specialised study and research in this area, on top of a general Obstetrics/Gynaecology qualification, gives your specialist a wide range of experience and expertise to perform an IVF cycle.
