When to see a fertility specialist?
If your ovulation is irregular or you don’t ovulate at all, your GP may refer you to Woom to plan fertility and infertility testing. Conditions such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) can influence your cycle and this is why GPs in the Perth metro area and in other parts of Western Australia refer their patients to our women’s health clinic in West Perth for further examination, or to discuss their future fertility treatment.

If, as a woman, you have been trying for at least 12 months and have not conceived, it may be reasonable to get in touch. To put it in perspective, this means that as a couple you have been having regular unprotected intercourse for at least 12 months without falling pregnant.

Other situations where fertility treatment may be advised is if, as a woman, you are 35 or older, and you have been trying to fall pregnant for 6 months without success.

Patients choose to work with us because we offer evidence-based medicine with a ‘wholistic’ approach that also looks at your lifestyle. Making changes to improve your chances of conceiving does not have to be a fluffy process. We are qualified specialists who look at the bigger picture of your life, so we can go on the journey together.

CREI certified Fertility Specialist in Perth

Apart from PCOS, there are other causes for infertility, such as hypogonadism for example. If you were diagnosed with hypogonadism, your ovaries would produce little or no sex hormones. You may hear your doctor or fertility specialist talk about HH: hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. Quite a mouthful, to indicate a condition that is caused by the pituitary gland (influenced by your hypothalamus) and a lack of sex hormones.

And yet in other situations, there may be other reasons to see a fertility doctor and discuss the options for treatment or fertility preservation. If you have a condition that is known to affect your future fertility (such as endometriosis) for example, preservation options are available for you. A fertility treatment consultation at Woom can also be relevant in case of recurrent ovarian cysts, total obstruction, or cancer requiring chemotherapy.

Types of fertility treatment
We’ve got your back when it’s about understanding and preparing for fertility treatment. Our patients tell us that they often feel confused about the information they receive from friends and relatives or just from online sources. We believe that when you attend a fertility clinic or see a specialist you deserve to be heard. Your fertility history is unique, and before you plan any type of fertility treatment, your specialist at Woom will make sure that you are well informed.

We believe that integrated fertility care starts with looking at you as a whole person, not just at the symptoms or conditions that stop you from falling pregnant.

Fertility specialist Perth

CREI certified

CREI is a certificate held by approximately 80 subspecialists in Australia and New Zealand.
CREI stands for ‘Certificate of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility’.

The certificate involves 3+ years of subspecialist study and research in the area of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, done by Obstetricians/Gynaecologists after their 6-year specialist program with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

So when you see a specialist at one of Perth’s fertility clinics, it is important to verify if they have a CREI certificate.

I am the only female CREI subspecialist in Western Australia and there are only 3 CREI certified specialists in our state. It means I have done extra study and research in the field of reproductive surgery, reproductive endocrinology, male and female infertility, menopause, paediatric gynaecology and infertility treatment.

Conceiving naturally

Can I improve my fertility at home before I see a Fertility Specialist?

The short answer is: yes you can.

There are many reasons why a couple does not conceive. Some of these causes, such as blocked tubes, need fertility treatment and this needs the expertise you will find at a fertility clinic. But there are also things that as a man or as a woman you can do to help improve your chances. And when we say ‘chances’, this could be a spontaneous conception or a successful fertility treatment cycle.

At Woom, we will be here for you to help you implement these new habits and to make changes. It’s not just about ‘symptoms’, it’s about empowering you to understand your own fertility and to take control of the things you can control.

Weight management, for example, is one of the things you can focus on and you can do this work without seeing your fertility specialist first. Once you focus on attaining the optimal weight range through diet and exercise, you will increase the chances of a positive outcome.

Another aspect of your journey you can take control of is stress management. We all know that a fertility journey, as well as the actual fertility treatment, can be burdensome. What our patients often tell us that instituting some mindfulness and relaxation makes a big difference.

It may also be wise to curb your alcohol consumption. For a man, this would mean you limit your intake to the recommended volume of standard drinks. And as a woman, well…There is no lower limit of safety, as the official medical advice would phrase it. In other words: minimal consumption is recommended.

Another habit you can take on in your daily life is the use of a supplement, such as folic acid. It is common to take this type of supplement when you are trying to conceive and our dietitian will help you with personalised advice.

Fertility tests

As much as we listen to your personal story, adjust your lifestyle habits and look at the holistic side of fertility, our main focus is on the evidence-based process to obtain all the medical information on your fertility challenge.

Our evidence-based expertise is essential to make well-informed decisions about the type of fertility treatment that is most relevant for you. And to get this information, we use a range of tests:

If you are worried about these tests or you don’t fully understand their meaning, rest assured that at Woom, you are in good hands.

I believe that evidence-based medicine does not have to feel cold and purely scientific. Our team will always help you understand the procedures and the outcomes, so you feel supported and well-informed.
